The world’s first sonic tractor beams that can lift and move objects using soundwaves have been built by a team that includes researchers at the University of Sussex.

Tractor beams are most commonly known as mysterious rays that can grab and lift objects. The concept was created by science-fiction writers but has since come to fascinate scientists and engineers – could a tractor beam actually be made?

Researchers at the Universities of Sussex and Bristol, in collaboration with Ultrahaptics, have now built a working tractor beam that uses high-amplitude soundwaves to generate an acoustic hologram that can pick up and move small objects.

The technique, published in Nature Communications on 27 October 2015, could be developed for a wide range of applications. For example, a sonic production line could transport delicate objects and assemble them – all without physical contact. Or a miniature version could grip and transport drug capsules…

What is a Circuit Breaker?

Circuit breakers act as automatic switches that prevent damage from spikes in electrical current or the incorrect flow of electrical current (short circuit). Circuit breakers do this by detecting irregularities in the flow of electricity, interrupting the current and then controlling the current arc. Interruption and containment of the electrical current (arc) can be accomplished through a variety of means including air pressure, and pressurized gas. While they perform the same function as fuses, circuit breakers can sustain repeated use as long as they are reset. An everyday example of a circuit breaker is a standard power strip. Like their commercial counterparts, power strips prevent power surges from damaging connected devices by switching off the flow of electricity. Key variations to keep in mind when selecting a circuit breaker include voltage range, current rating, and type (low voltage, magnetic, etc.).

Highly sensitive sensors have been successfully used to map the electrical activity of the developing heart in embryos, in a University of Sussex study published on 10th November, which could lead to new insight into how heart rhythm abnormalities develop, the researchers say.

The team fine-tuned patented Electric Potential Sensing (EPS) technology, developed at the University, to detect the electrical signals of zebrafish embryos from just three days after fertilization. The findings have been published in the scientific journalApplied Physics Letters.

Yes, I knew going in that electrical engineering is a male dominated major. But there’s a huge difference between knowing something intellectually and being able to comprehend what that means. My intro to electronics class is maybe fifteen percent female.

2. Forgetting how to write

My sister is four years older than me. She majored in neuroscience, and for years, she’s been making fun of me for wanting to go into engineering and telling me about how all the engineering students she knows have terrible grammar and can’t write anything comprehensible.  I always thought that was just a stereotype.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering Income Numbers on the Rise

According to IEEE-USA’s annual survey, the median income of electrical and electronics engineers increased 3% increase in 2014, the largest increase since 2008. The survey shows income gaps closing between women and men as well as between African Americans and Caucasians. In addition, the recently released survey shows that the highest median income numbers came from California while the lowest came from Arkansas. When Brian Thibodeau was graduating high school, he didn’t have the grades for – or the interest in – furthering his education.

But Thibodeau always had a passion for flying.

“I wasn’t focused during or after high school to go to college and become a pilot,” the Bucks County native said.

Thibodeau didn’t realize that just 10 years after graduating from high school, in 2014, he would be awarded the Science, Math and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship created by the Department of Defense. The award encompasses a full ride to his master’s program at Temple, $33,000 annual stipend, paid summer internships and funds for health insurance and textbooks.

After high school, Thibodeau attended Bucks County Community College for two years. The recent undergraduate of Temple engineering decided to enlist in the air force when he was 21.

The BLM is Looking For Mountain Bikers

When people think of governmental departments and bureaucracy, they rarely think of anything good or exciting or fun. When people think of the Bureau of Land Management, probably nothing comes to mind. Those who follow the news and politics might remember that they were engaged in an armed standoff with a Nevada rancher named Cliven Bundy but that’s about it. It turns out that the Bureau of Land Management (or the BLM) is the federal agency in charge of the country’s public lands and making sure that they are cared for and unharmed, especially when commercial interests come into play.mountain-bikers-55372_640

The latest news from the BLM has nothing to do with armed militias or a stubborn farmer refusing to pay the money he owes the government. It actually has to do with mountain bikers. What about mountain bikers, you ask? That they are welcome and loved the BLM and that the BLM wants to help them find the best trails so they can ride with joy. They have partnered with the International Mountain Bicycling Association and MTB Project to create and launch a new section of the BLM website that is promising to change the way people approach mountain biking and choose which trails to ride.

The newest section of the website focuses on the top 20 locations for riding in the country and has both maps and interactive trail guides so that you can get a lay of the land before setting off on your adventure. The project is the brainchild of the current director of the BLM, Neil Kornze. He has been a biker since he was young and he realized that there was a disconnect between the BLM and mountain bikers — a large group of people that use BLM land with some frequency but rarely ever engage with the bureau. Seeing as how many mountain bikers end up working and caring for the trails they love to ride, working to reach them only makes sense. This is great news for bikers looking for prime riding locations and great news for the BLM. I know I can’t wait to get started!

Electrical Engineering Could Lead to better Wireless Signals

We live in a world that would literally be unrecognizable to people from only 50 years ago. The technology that we have at our fingertips used to be beyond comprehension and without it, there’s no denying that the world as we know would crumble to a half and end. And yet, even with all of the access we have to millennia of human knowledge and experience, people are still running into issues when it comes to wireless technology and wireless signals. As most people know, the internet is still slow and gadgets that are supposedly wireless frequently don’t work as advertised or simply not at all. However, there is good news!wireless technology signal

It turns out that some of the research and work being done by electrical engineers very well may end up impacting wireless connections as we know them, vastly improving on both the current design and reliability. Dr. Aria Nosratinia, an electrical engineering professor at UT Dallas, is currently researching and working on ways to improve the wireless connections that have become so important in our lives. As both a sign of support and a sign of just how important this research is becoming, the National Science Foundation has awarded him 3 grants that end up totalling over $2 million this fall. With some of the grants going towards collaborative efforts with other universities and professors, everyone involved has high hopes for the outcome.

The main goal of the studies and grant money is to find a way to deal with wireless interference — the sort that leads to dropped calls, poor wireless reception, and electronics that don’t work as well as we would hope. One way to get around interference that’s being looked into is breaking wireless messages into microstreams so that they would be able to go through other signals instead of bouncing against them. Other techniques being researched have to do with manipulating coherence intervals and the discovery of new dimensions within communications over multi-user wireless channels that will allow for the development of new tools that will enhance wireless capabilities. While research is still being done and nothing is certain yet, this most definitely speaks well for the wireless future.
